about the art
After years out of a studio I joined Sample Studio with notebooks full of ideas. So far I have been concentrating on 2 distinct strands. Abstract Landscapes and the Human Face.
I begin by working on a landscape. These get cut up and mixed up with other cut up landscapes, these cut-offs are then assembled into new geometrical imagined landscapes. This process is very similar to a baker making a Chester Cake or what we in Cork call Donkey’s Gudge. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gur_cake
The face is reduced to the bare essentials. These drawings are repeated hundreds of times so that the process becomes robotic, in time the marks became looser, more random. I usually have very little say in what happens next. Afterwards it's easy to make sense of things, but half the time I'm just making and not really thinking.
Both of these strands work comfortably side by side. Mainly using acrylics on canvas, board and discarded clothing. Lately, it appears there might be crossover between these two strands.
