about the art
My photography style focuses on portraiture and formalist techniques. The subject’s gaze within my work varies, occasionally they are gazed at by spectators and other times, they confront the viewer with their own gaze. This acts as a study of dominance and vulnerability. My use of light and shadow within the works, usually displayed through a splitting of the face allows for a multiplicity of interpretations of the subject. It also allows for a stripped back presentation of my photography, taking away distractions within the frame to enhance the main focus of the work.
My formalist photography focuses on shape and colour. In an experimentation of shape within the frame, I strip back the subject of the photograph to a 2D object in order to eliminate distractions from the work. This is also displayed in my focus on block colour. Usually, the image will contain one or two focus colours, which further enhances the analysis of shape within the frame. |
