Background
Sample-Studios is a not-for-profit arts organisation that supports the professional development of contemporary arts practitioners in Cork city and beyond. What began as a volunteer-led initiative in 2011 has grown into a professional arts organisation with a dedicated team of staff and volunteers that manages: artist studios and shared facilities in Churchfield, the city-wide TACTIC Visual Arts Programme, the Lord Mayor’s Pavilion exhibition and project space, and a successful graduate Residency Programme. Following a sustained period of growth, we are currently seeking an Artistic Director to manage the delivery of our services, including the development of an independent contemporary arts programme for Cork city.
The Role
The Artistic Director is responsible for the day-to-day administrative and operational management of Sample-Studios’ 29 workspaces and shared production facilities in Churchfield, as well as our satellite premises at the Lord Mayor’s Pavilion in the city centre. This is a challenging role that demands excellent organisational, leadership and inter-personal skills. Sample-Studios has developed a reputation for delivering an ambitious contemporary arts programme and the successful candidate is expected to further develop, nurture and promote an exceptional arts programme for Cork city. In that respect, a deep knowledge and understanding of national and international arts practice is essential.

Key Areas of Responsibility:
- Oversee the day-to-day operational management of the facilities in Churchfield and the Lord Mayor’s Pavilion in the city centre ensuring employer best practices.
- Manage and maintain the organisation’s administrative and operational systems, including: the financial management, HR, Health and Safety, governance and compliance.
Planning, Leadership and Governance
- The Artistic Director is supported by a dedicated Board of Directors, 2 part-time administrative staff, and a small team of volunteers. The role involves the support and supervision of part-time staff, the voluntary curatorial team and residency recipients.
- Promote professional development opportunities for members through, for example, curatorial and artist exchanges, residencies, workshops and community outreach initiatives.
- Together with the curatorial team, manage and develop an ambitious TACTIC Visual Arts Programme.
- Together with the Board of Directors, develop and implement the organisation’s Strategic and Business Plan. Ensuring Sample-Studios is represented at relevant local, regional and national decision-making platforms.
- Advocate and promote Sample-Studios as a creative hub in the community built on collaborations with individuals, local authority, community organisations and voluntary sector agencies.
- Manage and develop revenue streams, including earned income opportunities and public and private grant applications.
- Liaise with administrative staff on budget planning and forecasting.
- Present monthly management reports to the Board of Directors on the financial health of the organisation.
- A relevant third level qualification or minimum of 2 years relevant experience in a managerial, development or co-ordination role is essential, ideally within the creative sector.
- Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary venue is desirable
- A strong awareness/ experience of the arts/ creative sector is desirable
- Demonstrable experience of successful bursary/grant applications and/or fundraising experience is desirable.
- You should be located within easy access of Cork City, Ireland. A full driving licence is an advantage.
Terms
- Flexible working hours (24 hours or 3 days per week) based at Sample-Studios in Churchfield, Cork city, Ireland.
- Some evening and/or weekend work is expected during busy periods with a time-off in lieu system in operation.
- Salary range is €28k - €33k (pro-rata) depending on experience.
- The contract will initially be for 6 months with the role being reviewed in January 2020.

- 15th June 2020 :: Submission deadline is 5pm (GMT+1) All applications will be forwarded to our selection panel.
- 15th -19th June 2020 :: The panel will finalise a short list.
- 22nd - 23rd June 2020 :: We will make contact with you to let you know if you have made the short list. If you have, we will organise an interview time & date with you.
- 29th June - 3rd July 2020 :: Interviews
- 6th - 10th July 2020 :: Final selection
- 13th July 2020 :: Announcement
- 1st August 2020 :: Start date with Sample-Studios
