about the art
Curiosity is the driving force behind my creative expression. Playfulness has continually informed how I work. Building a relationship with materials and processes and allowing that relationship to shift and expand in an organic and flexible way. I have always been a very materials based artist eager to explore new and interesting mark making processes through organic and inorganic materials. In past work I have experimented with the production of pigments from very earthy sources such as rust from a famine bowl, charcoaled organic matter and bones. The work that followed was a deep and deliberate response to the famine workhouse where my studio was
located. I have a huge respect for the magic of drawing and how the body converses with mark making. Now I’m working with long and multiple exposure photography using medium format film with a 1935 Box Brownie camera which has been in my family since it was new. Its significance as such an object feeds into and informs my being in the work all the more. |
