Cahoots 2020: The Space Between |
OPEN CALL |

Sample-Studios TACTIC Visual Arts Programme is hosting CAHOOTS 2020: The Space Between.
This exchange will enable the members of Sample-Studios (Cork), A4 Sounds (Dublin) and Engage Art Studio (Galway) to engage in collaborative workshops and presentations on the themes of language and landscape. Sample-Studios would like to invite members from all three studios to submit work that will be curated by Guest Artist-Curator Nicola Anthony for a series of video interviews and, in 2021, a publication. All media will be considered and selected members will receive a fee.
Selected members will be invited to participate in a series of video interviews about the work they created and their response to the themes of Cahoots. Videographers will work with selected members in Dublin, Galway and Cork to develop the videos safely. 3-6 videos will be produced, dependant on the number of curated works and members selected to participate.
The videos will be issued on partner organisations’ websites and promoted via social media platforms. The videos will also be promoted via our funding partners Cork City Council, Cork City Council Arts Office and Galway 2020.

Nicola Anthony, Guest Artist Curator, Reflection on the Cahoots Exchange Themes:
Our minds work in a hybrid of visual, sensory and verbal modes, and if we choose to, we can look under the surface of everything that we think of as a constant and understand it anew. We are surrounded by language and landscape, those age-old elements which have influenced artists in Ireland and indeed human civilisation through time. On the surface these two pillars appear to anchor us between a mode of communication - highly symbolic, intangible and non-physical - and a sense of place which grounds us and gives us context. However, there is a more liminal and ambiguous space in between these definitions. Through the lens of the artists, we start to see how language is present and encoded in unexpected places, from our memories and our gestures to the visual and tangible signifiers that surround us. Conversely we discover that landscape also starts to shift it’s boundaries - it can be powerfully visceral or even go beyond the physical, it could be permeable, timeless, imagined or subjective. Navigating these two concepts, the artists have made work influenced by language and landscape, responding to it and reframing it alongside ideas of people, place, circumstance, and moments in time.
