GETTING TO KNOW THE SAMPLE-STUDIOS BUILDING

Access to building:
Front gate:
Access is through the padlocked gate – please close behind you if you are in the building alone and if the office is unattended. There are often visitors to the building along with members of the public who are lost in the area so keeping the gate closed avoids having people wander in.
Note: the notched (red) end of the barrel goes into the lock of the gate padlock.
Shutters & security:
Entering the building: If you are the first to arrive, the building should be closed and all the shutters down. To enter the building, use the longer of your two keys to open the main entrance shutter using the key operator to the left of the front shutter. Note, this works opposite to standard, i.e. turn clockwise to open.
Once you have pegged in, go into the kitchen to open the kitchen window shutters (located under the shelves that are diagonally opposite the door). The keys are kept in the shutter operator.
Then go to the Side Entrance (Door 3) and the key operators are located between Door 3 and the window at the foot of staircase 2.
The roller shutters at the front (Door 1) and side (Door 3) of the building should always be open when there is someone in the building as they are both associated with fire escapes.
General security responsibilities: If you are in a shared studio (Studios 005, 006 and 106) and you are the last one in that studio, it is your responsibility to ensure that the studio room shutter is closed when you leave and to check around the room to make sure that it is safe (nothing switched on that shouldn't be, no piles of oily rags etc).
Likewise, if you are the last to use a shared facility, make sure that the space left in a safe condition
Exiting the building: The last member to leave at night has responsibility to ensure all shutters are closed.
Check the notice board to see if there are other members still in. If there is only one other person in, go to see them and tell them that you are leaving. That way, they know that they are on their own and you have verified that the peg has not been left accidentally. Walk around the building once to check it has been left in a safe condition. Close the following five shutters internally: Door 3, the staircase 2 landing window, 3 x kitchen windows. Leave by the main entrance and close the shutter. Close the car park gate.
If someone has accidentally shuttered you in: Open the shutter at the side door (Door 3). Walk round to the main entrance (Door 1) and open the shutter. Enter the building, close the shutter at Door 3 and leave via Door 1 closing the shutter after you. If this happens you must fill in an incident report and leave this with the office.
