about the art
My artistic practice is concerned with investigating the themes of landscape and memory through painting. An ongoing process of studio and site based research, making and exhibiting enables me to explore the idea that how we experience a given landscape is unfixed, and contingent upon deep-rooted beliefs and memories. In recent work I have concentrated on sites that occupy the margins of urban and rural places - these include suburbs, coastlines, docklands and agricultural land, in the belief that they have the potential to evoke, and at the same time obscure, natural and human narratives. These peripheral sites attract me, because of their location at a geographical and territorial interface, and the challenges encountered when rendering their inherent divergences and coherences in paint. The physical, and topographical properties of these spaces and the impact this has on the psyche, emotions and memory is, for me, intriguing. The original place of inspiration is to some extent lost or altered in translation, as it is processed through the act of making, recollection and reconstructing. The writings of W.G. Sebald[1], especially in relation to memory and our attempts to recapture an ever allusive past, are an ongoing reference for my work.
